AT THE FARM
Steve and Carmen Ragsdale welcome you to Sunshine Herb & Lavender Farm. We are a working farm, so when you visit there is always something going on.
THE ON GOING CYCLE
- November thru March
This is an important time in the growing cycle of a lavender plant. The plants are dormant preparing for a rapid growth spurt as the soil temperatures rise in the spring. The plants have all been pruned for winter.
- April thru May
Soil temperatures rise and new growth begins. Pruning, planting, propagating, and weeding are all taking place during this time, along with preparing new planting beds and replacing plants. About mid-May Lavandula Stoechas begin to bloom and will continue on until the first frost of the year. Lavandula Angustifolia’s begin to push out spikes that will begin to bloom in a matter of weeks.
- June thru October

When June arrives, Angustifolia’s are on the way to blooming and producing. A couple of our favorite Culinary lavenders are in this group “Royal Velvet” and “Melissa”, along with “Maillette” a plant we love to distill for its prized oil. As July approaches the Lavendula X Intermedia begin to make their presence know, a light dusting of purple slowly overtakes the rows of dark green plants. Grosso, Gros Blu, and Impress Purple are some of our favorites among this group. By mid-July
they will all be in full bloom, just in time for the Lavender Festival after which the harvest begins. The Angustifolia’s are harvested first, as the harvest proceeds pruning begins. Distillation begins as oil plants are harvested, the air is filled with the aroma of the fresh oil.
